Pediatric Compounding

Children deserve medications that are built for them — the right dose, the right form, without ingredients they don’t need. At Voshell’s Pharmacy, our pediatric compounding program is designed to address the gaps that commercial products simply cannot fill: wrong concentrations, oversized tablets, unavailable liquids, and formulations that no child will willingly take.
Our goals are to address drug shortages, narrow the gaps in compliance, and strengthen therapeutic outcomes for every pediatric patient.

Children are not simply smaller patients. Their metabolism, organ maturity, and physiology change significantly from infancy through adolescence — and so does the way their bodies process medication.
Pediatric compounding addresses these differences through:

Many children on ADHD medications struggle with swallowing tablets or capsules, or require a dose that falls between available commercial strengths. Compounded formulations allow prescribers to match the dose precisely to the child’s response — and deliver it in a form the child can manage.
Children with thyroid disorders, growth hormone concerns, precocious puberty, or adrenal conditions often require medications at concentrations far below what commercial products provide. Pediatric compounding allows endocrinologists and pediatricians to prescribe exact doses in child-friendly forms.
Pediatric skin conditions — including eczema, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, and fungal infections — often require topical preparations at concentrations gentle enough for developing skin. Compounded topical creams and ointments can be prepared without the fragrances, preservatives, or irritants found in some commercial products.
Children with multiple drug allergies or sensitivities may need formulations that are free of specific dyes, preservatives, or excipients present in commercially available products. Compounding allows us to build a clean formulation from the active ingredient up.
Pediatric dental compounding includes topical anesthetics, antimicrobial rinses, fluoride preparations, and post-procedural pain management formulations suited to children’s smaller mouths, lower tolerances, and compliance challenges.
For children with rare diseases, orphan conditions, or diagnoses where no commercial pediatric product exists, compounding may be the only path to appropriate therapy. Voshell’s Pharmacy works closely with specialty prescribers and children’s healthcare teams to support these complex cases.

Making medication approachable for children is as important as making it effective. We offer a full range of pediatric-friendly delivery forms:
A Note for Parents
We know how hard it is to watch your child struggle with a medication — whether they’re spitting it out, gagging, or refusing outright. If that’s your experience, it’s worth asking your child’s prescriber whether a compounded formulation might make a difference. Our pharmacists are happy to speak with you directly about what options might be available for your child’s specific prescription.
Insurance and Coverage
We accept some third-party insurance plans, though coverage for compounded medications varies by plan. Our team can help clarify coverage options for your patients.
Ask your child’s prescriber about a compounded formulation.

Pediatric compounded medications are prepared based on prescriptions from licensed prescribers. All formulations are individualized and are not FDA-approved drug products. Compounded medications may not be appropriate for all pediatric patients. Parents and caregivers should discuss the risks and benefits of compounded medications with their child’s healthcare provider.
